ACTION January 12, 2012 The NYS Legislature amended the law to allow COPE deductions from Retirees' pension checks. Consequently, the PEF Legislative Office and the Retiree Office developed a process to solicit and handle COPE contributions. Periodically you may receive in the mail information on COPE and a pension-check deduction authorization form, or you can use the COPE form on this site by clicking on COPE, printing the form, and mailing it in. The COPE fund is an important tool in PEF's political action program. Federal law prohibits the use of union dues money for political purposes in federal elections. Consequently, the only political funds available to PEF must come from voluntary contributions such as COPE. Many Retirees have the mistaken idea that only NYS politics has a serious influence upon our well-being. On the contrary, federal legislation can have a big impact upon various seniors programs as well as the funding for large and important segments of the state workforce. The only way for PEF to have any leverage in this arena is to have a well-funded COPE war-chest. Currently, 217 Retirees have signed up to donate a total of $9,666/year. When you receive a COPE mailing, we urge you to join with these 217 activists and contribute to this worth-while effort. Do your part to keep PEF's political action program both strong and effective. |
