Benefits Summary
The following is a brief summary of some of the more important benefits available to all NYS retirees:
1) Health benefits, including prescription drug coverage, are administered through the NYS Dept. of Civil Service - Health Insurance Unit.
2) Your state dental and vision benefits continue for 28 days after the last day of the payroll period you worked. However, if you are age 64 or younger, extended dental coverage for eighteen months is available through COBRA; you have 60 days to respond. If you are 65 or older, and enrolled in Medicare at the time of retirement, COBRA is available. In addition, once a person retires the Department of Civil Service will notify GHI and the pensioner will receive an offer from GHI to enroll in the Retiree Preferred Plan. You have 30 days to respond.
3) You may continue your term life insurance through the PEF Membership Benefits office.
4) Pensions are administered by the NYS and Local Retirement Systems, operated out of the NYS Comptroller’s office. A beneficiary of a retired state worker may be eligible for a death benefit and these are also handled by the Retirement System.
5) Active membership also entitles you to certain other benefits through the PEF Membership Benefits Unit. These include such things as a legal plan, discounted driver education programs, Disney discounts, car rental discounts, home and automobile insurance, and travel service. You must be a PEF Retiree member, in good standing, in order to take advantage of any of the benefit programs. | |
